I heard the garage door creak open from my room, followed by the low rumble of my mom’s car. “Here we go again,” I thought as I trudged down the stairs. It was time to perform my weekly duty of bringing the groceries in from the car. This mind-numbing chore includes five trips to and from the car, and five trips up and down two flights of stairs. Perhaps it’s my millennial impatience, but lugging around groceries feels like a complete waste of time. Rather than resigning myself to completing this tedious task, I started designing an exoskeleton to reduce the load to one trip. I spend several hours a day (on top of my school work) researching and designing this system. Challenging the need for work is in my DNA. Efficiency is my goal. Collaboration is vital to success, no one can do everything by themselves. That’s why a Cornell engineering education would help me improve the world we live in. Through my short time at Cornell University, I have grown to truly appreciate the vast resources Cornell has to offer. I will be able to benefit from the collaborative environment and the diversity of the university’s resources; all the while contributing my own unique perspective to the university’s pool of knowledge. My plan is to seek a Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant through either DARPA or the National Institutes of Health to complete my exoskeleton design at Cornell and to commercialize my product. I would use my education to innovate productivity killers under our noses that go unnoticed, whether it’s first world problems like bringing in the groceries, or enabling senior citizens to live independently.
