Corporal Punishment Corporal punishment should be illegal, “If an adult hit another adult with and object of that size (paddle), it would be considered assault with a weapon”. This was said by Elizabeth Gershoff who is a developmental psychologist at the University of Texas at Austin. Elizabeth Gershoff simply pointed out the fact that punishment can be done differently than beating a child. Gershoff who has studied corporal punishment and came to the conclusion that children are getting paddled for behaviors that are related to their disabilities. There is many reasons that are supported by science, that say corporal punishment does not benefit the student. It, corporal punishment, is an unnecessary form of abuse that can be handled many different ways. Especially if the child is then afraid to attend school. School is a place that a child spends much of their time, you want them to feel comfortable and not terrified of not understanding a question. Many of the problems that are presented in school can be handled by the parents at home. One parent said, “We want her to know that if she does wrong, there’s a consequence for those actions,” … “If you take corporal punishment out of the schools, what are you left with”? This is outrageous to me simply because, bad behavior usually begins at home. It can be fixed at home which will result in it being fixed at school also. Teaching a child respect should be taught at home, if the child does not respect their own parents how are they expected to respect their teachers. There just a few reasons why corporal punishment does not have a positive effect on students, some backed by
