Humanity getting corrupted by power is not a new phenomenon, it is human nature. Take Genesis for example, God told Adam and Eve to not eat from the tree, however they were tempted by the serpent and could not resist the urge to obtain power. See wealth and power corrupt people, and it pushes them further away from God, therefore making them immoral. The characters in The Great Gatsby — by F. Scott Fitzgerald — are also affected by the human flaw of corruption. This novel teaches readers that money can make one look complete, while not actually being complete behind the facade. Gatsby always has dreams of how he wants to be. Gatsby’s parties give Gatsby the persona that he is great and complete. This is what makes Gatsby look so mysterious, because no person is that perfect. Nick realizes that Gatsby “hardly knew what he was saying”(57). In order for Gatsby to make other people believe his story, he weaves lies into the truth to make people believe that he is not a part of any illegal operations. He tells people that most of his wealth was acquired by a family legacy, however, Gatsby was cheated out of his share of Dan’s wealth. All of these lies even make Gatsby confused about what he is telling people because, “he wanted nothing less of Daisy than that she should go to Tom and say: “I never loved you”” (69). With all the lies that Gatsby tells people — he even fools himself— Gatsby is living in a false reality, believing that his dream will come true. However, with all facades, they take you right up to your dream, however tragically never being able to obtain it. Daisy is Gatsby’s green light, it appears to be obtainable because of how bright it is, however Daisy is more distant than Gatsby
