Capitalism, it’s not all it portrays to be. In “The Jungle”, Capitalism is characterized to be a corrupt, consumer of hopes and dreams that worked people like animals. On the other hand Socialism is illustrated as hope, promise, and endurance for the working men and women of the Stockyards of Chicago as it is told throughout the life of an immigrant named Jugis Rudkus from Lithuania. Destroyer of hopes and dreams is what Capitalism is characterized to in “The Jungle”. An example of the destruction of hopes and dreams of Capitalism is the life of Jurgis. Once Jurgis immigrates to Chicago in the United States from Lithuania, he thinks that capitalism gives him hopes and dreams and thinks that all he needs to be is a hard working man. In addition, a perfect example of the corruption of Capitalism was when Jurgis suggested making ends meet to pay off the house he had bought. In order for him to keep the house he had to working more and more each time to provide for the house and his family. In the end, Jurgis failed to pay the house in time and lost everything becoming another victim of corruption in Chicago. Another, example of the corruption of Capitalism was when Jurgis was given a hundred dollar bill and wanted to get change for it. Jurgis went into a bar asking the bartender/owner if he had change for a hundred dollar bill, the bartender agreed to change it for him only to steal it from Jurgis. Socialism was illustrated as the hopeful remedy for the corrupt Capitalism. A perfect example for socialism been the hopeful remedy for Capitalism was when Jurgis first found out about socialism and the inspiring words of “The comrade”. Jurgis was out on the streets as he saw a crowd in a stage and went in and found the helpful words of a socialist, after the speech Jurgis met with the socialist speaker. The speaker helped Jurgis by showing him to his friend; latter the friend gave Jurgis food and shelter.
