The world today faces many issues, one of them being corruption of power. Corruption of power has become an unfair practice in both past and modern society. Corruption can be demonstrated in the 2010 novel “Trash” by Andy Mulligan and the poem “Climate Change” by Milli Dubin. While Andy mulligan approaches the topic by focussing on the police, Milli Dubin focuses more on the main leaders, companies and humans.

In Andy Mulligan’s novel “Trash”, corruption of power is a reoccurring theme. It is first seen when the police come to Behala to arrest Raphael. “Some of the little kids were crying but most people were calm, just watching. She then proceeds to expose the leaders. “It is our responsibility and our leaders are turning a blind eye to the raw reality we are killing what she created.” Dubin has used emotive language. She outlines that we are “killing” what “she” created. Dubin has also used symbolism by referring to the nature and world as “she” making people feel bad for it as they think of it like human. The use of emotive language when saying that we, being humans, are killing what nature has created adds emphasise and plays with the emotions of the audience.. But the corruption and blame aren’t just on the general public. Dubin use emotive language again when saying our leaders have turned a blind eye. She creates this idea that they are an enemy. Dubin has raised the issue to people about the corruption occurring to people’s habits and the world leaders. As the poem progresses to the end, Dubin returns back to the themes about corruption to power ignorance. “We are screaming, we are crying. We will make our voices heard above the sound of oil rigs and private jets.” The composer has used both inclusive language and repetition. She has used these techniques when she continues to say we are/ will before each action or verb. She includes the audience and emphasises her point by making it stick inside everyone’s head. We continue to make noise and repeat actions but the positions of power have become so ignorant and corrupt that they cannot hear for their greed covers their eyes and ears to the damage they caused. From beginning to end, Dubin creates an aware society through her audience about how ignorant and corrupt people of power are, through the use of emotive language, symbolism, inclusive language and repetition.While both authors/composers take a slightly different approach, they both alert their audience about
