The history of the corvette started in 1953, and it is still being made today. Today the corvette is a lot different then it started out in 53, back then it wasn't meant to go fast, it was made to cruise in comfort and style. The vette didn't start to become a muscle car until a few years down the road, but when they finally got the power they wanted it was a big hit, and to this day the corvette is one of the most wanted cars ever built. The 97 vette brought big changes, this year the transmission was moved to the back for weight distribution and the frame was made out of hydro aluminum, which made it about 200 pounds lighter. In 1999 the hardtop version was released, and in 2001 the hard top ZR1 was released, with a LS1 engine with titanium components. 2002 brought a power change for the vette it went from 383 horsepower to 405. 2004 was the last year for this generation, and to honor it the made a 24 hour lemans addition. Once the C5 generation was over, the C6 corvette was brought to life and there was big changes to come. The C6 generation started in 2005 and ran all the way to 2013, the first thing they did was swap the motor to get the power up to 400 horsepower. In 2006 the new ZO6 was born, and it came with a 505 horsepower motor. 2008 brought the revel of the new 6.2 liter motor with 600 horsepower, this motor came to be one of teh biggest success in GM history. In 2009 the new ZR1 came out, and it came with 650 horsepower and a carbon fiber roof which got rid of 250 pounds of weight. In 2011 they came out with the option for you to go to the corvette plant and help put your own ette together, that same year the came out with the carbon limited edition which was a mix of the ZO6 and the ZR1.
