In order to maintain just relationships, partners need to constantly determine their equality, equity, and needs (Kelley, 15). Both parties need to feel as though they are getting what they need from the relationship. It must also feel as though there is a fairly equal give and take between the two parties. Marius’ letter tells Valjean that he has taken over the relationship and has made it unjust, which has prevented Cosette and him from communicating their true thoughts and feelings. If the relationship was still existing in a “space of us”, where each party can freely express their wants and needs then Cosette would be aware of how much Valjean thinks he needs her in his life.
