Cosmetology the journey of Beauty Have you ever thought about what you want to be when you grow up? There are many professions that this world has to offer. Cosmetology is one profession where one can go to work, have fun doing it, and still get paid pretty well. “There are over 145,779 licensed cosmetologists currently employed in the United States. 92.1% of all licensed cosmetologists are women, while 7.9% are men.” (“Cosmetologist Demographics and Statistics…”) Cosmetology is the work of beauty therapists, including hairdressing, esthetics, and nails. These can include being creative, customer- service skills, listening skills, physical stamina, tidiness, and being good with time management. (Jones and Lozier) In addition, To qualify for a license, candidates typically must graduate from a “state-approved barber or cosmetology program” and pass a state exam. Furthermore, to qualify for this occupation, one must be at least 16 to enroll, however some beauty schools require a GED or high school diploma. While there are many different paths one can choose from with this license the most common is to work for an experienced salon where training and gaining experience occurs. Cosmetology school’s number one way to get in is to pay. Cosmetology can be a very time consuming and costly career. On average a full time student takes about a year to graduate.The Paul Mitchell School of Beauty in Honolulu, Hawaii being a private school, “costs roughly 61,735,00” including tuition, taxes, housing, etc. However Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho being in state and more local only costs $22,388.00 with all other fees included.
