Mascot Hall of Fame Induction Before Cosmo the Cougar was the official mascot for Brigham Young University, the school was represented by two real animals. The school kept two live cougars on their campus. At every game, the cougars would roam around the sidelines, in a cage of course. In 1929, after let’s just say the cougars escaped, so the school switched to Cosmo as their permanent mascot. Now, Cosmo is able to roam around the BYU campus without alarming anybody (7 facts). One example of Cosmo’s youth focus is his “Kids Club.” In an article released by “The Daily Universe,” Brigham-Young University's official newspaper, “You just walk into a room and (the kids) see you and you literally made their year,” recent Cosmo Nick Gozsalves (2010-13) said, in addition to the fact that the reaction from the kids was stellar every single time, and very memorable (Gozsalves). Cosmo first began making appearances in 1924 when BYU owned two live cougars. A 1928 article reported that BYU Athletic Director Eugene L. Roberts looked upon the Cougar as being a symbol of the West, even Utah, for its charm of movement, wisdom and power. The 1990’s were a big change for Cosmo. The Cosmo Kids Club was founded later in 1997 (Mortenson). As is easily seen, Cosmo has a big part of him is dedicated to children. There are two main ways he shows this; he will include the kids in his famous dances, or he will help induct them into his iconic kids club designed specifically to help kids have fun.
