Counselling Psychology in Australia Although considered a specialisation, counselling psychology (CP) is a relatively broad area of practice which encompasses a wide-range of therapeutic orientations, techniques, and client populations (APS, 2018; PsyBA, 2013; Corey, 2013). While there is considerable variation within CP, adherence to the scientist-practitioner model (i.e., evidence-based practice) is critical and CPs undergo extensive training in a variety of empirically supported therapeutic methodologies (APS, 2018; Di Mattia & Grant, 2016; Vespia & Sauer, 2006). Moreover, I believe the congruence between my personal and professional self extends to the specific characteristics that are important in creating an strong therapeutic alliance and are associated with effective CP; that is, a strong identity, effective interpersonal skills, and openness (Corey, 2013). As my sister pointed out, CP is a part of me; I’m connected and committed to helping, supporting, encouraging and empowering people who are struggling. I believe I have, and use, effective interpersonal skills (i.e., communication and collaboration skills, empathy, compassion, understanding, and respect for myself and others); strive to be flexible and open-minded; and, to accept and learn from my mistakes. Whether talking with my family and friends, caring for my grandfather, studying, at work, or volunteering, I appreciate every experience as an opportunity to strengthen and improve these skills; to discover and develop new skills, and to become the very best me I can
