ESSAY #1 As of this point in the semester I noticed how a Counselor should fully understand what they are doing in the professional and personal aspect of their job. If a Counselor has the wrong mindset or was poorly trained to help others it can damage a client more than what they initially came in with. Not only do the clients get hurt, but also the Counselor themselves can suffer from damage as well. For example, if the Counselor has the mindset that they are going to help solve the problems of other people the Counselor will in effect become mentally drained, potentially physically drained, possible prideful, and left with a sense of helplessness. The client will become solely dependent on the Counselor to solve and dismember every problem and issue they encounter in the moment. A human being is not capable of solving their very own problems even less capable of handling multiple other problems. The client will ask too much from the Counselor and would never really move on in life. They will continue to rely on others to solve their problems and fix the issues instead of gaining the skills to figure a solution out independently. It will drain them mentally giving clients the feeling that they are incapable of living life as individuals. A Counselor needs to understand that they are there not to give advice, not to find the solutions to problems, nor to rescue clients that are in need. Counselors have to go in with the mindset that they are going to guide a person and build the confidence of that person to properly solve their problems, provide them with resources to help get them their but not be the resources itself. There is less pressure to being a Counselor when knowing where I stand professionally with a client, but it can still be
