The purpose of this article study is to expand the previous concepts on supervision in counselor-in-training programs. Dr. Patterson stated in this article that counseling programs should devote themselves to two or three theoretical orientations contingent on the competency and proficiency of the department’s faculty. According to the article, students should enroll in a theory course that covers the major theories in depth. Furthermore, students would then decide on the theory they desire and register in an advanced course covering that theory, with an instructor who is an expert in it. Additionally, students would then continue in supervision with the instructor of that theory. When a student requests preparation in a theory that is not a specialty of the faculty at that institution, he be assisted in transferring to an institution presenting his desired training. …show more content…

Moreover, counselors are using more atheoretical or eclectic models for supervision. My on-site counseling supervisor during practicum and internship had an eclectic approach to counseling. It appears that most supervisors do not follow a particular theory of psychotherapy or of supervision and deem themselves to be eclectic. As I continue my development as a counselor, I am working towards redefining approach in regards to my theoretical orientation and outlook on supervision
