The theme in Counting by 7s is personal loss, family, and friendship. Willow had lost her parents to a car accident and that took a toll on her. Among her grief she had friends who helped her to overcome it and I’d say that’s a really important thing. Losing parents or someone that you really care about must be really hard. But having friends or family that can be by your side during that time is really important. Friendship, family, and personal loss is overall the main themes in this book.

Her and her friends all reside in California, which is where the whole story takes place in. Bakersfield, California to be exact. She has a hard time interacting with others, She doesn’t have many friends, but she would be willing to do anything for her friends. Although she is adopted, she never has a hard time talking to her parents about anything. She absolutely loves and adores them. Mai Nguyen is one of Willow’s friends. Mai speaks Vietnamese and English and is currently a freshman in high school. She has a brother Quang Ha who attends counseling just like Willow does. That’s how they met. One day, in a counseling room, on a hot day, that’s where it all began.

In conclusion I really enjoyed the story of Willow Chance “Counting by 7s.” I personally really enjoyed it because of Willow’s personality. The story really brought out a lot of emotions out of me. Some parts I enjoyed over others but it had me hooked from the start. I think that we learn that things do get better over time and we should really start appreciating friends and family more than we already are. Overall I think that the book had nice themes in it, definitely a must
