He convinced his followers they wouldn’t need weapons to retaliate, only the conviction that they were right (Doc 5.) King’s followers were eager to get arrested and some were even disappointed when they were not on the list because they were so proud to be arrested for the cause of freedom (Doc 8.)
Dr.King wanted all African Americans to be treated equally, he wanted freedom for his brothers and sisters. He urged people to stand up and push for freedom in a nonviolent way but the road to freedom was not easy. You had to be willing to lay down your life even if it meant you could end up dead, he states “Others have marched with us down nameless streets of the South. They have languished in filthy, roach-infested jails, suffering the abuse and brutality of angry policemen...” (King 274) Dr. King describes the experiences of what they had to endure, these are the experiences the people who joined him had to face.

Dr.King is widely known for his earth shattering “I have a dream” speech that he delivered over 40 years ago, in 1963. The speech made its first appearance during the March On Washington, one of the largest political rallies in American history that tackled various issues regarding civil rights for African Americans. Dr. Martin Luther King’s involvement in the civil rights movement is based off of his beliefs of individual responsibility and justice versus injustice. Going off of his beliefs King would go on to encourage thousands of other African Americans to join him in the civil rights movement. Dr. King believed that every person had a voice that counted, and that the oppressed rely on that voice to free themselves. He believed that “Time itself is neutral”(King) saying that if the oppressed continue to stay quiet and conform with what society wants then nothing will change. My hero is Martin Luther King. He was born on January 15,1929 and he was assassinated on April 4, 1968. He dealt with segregation and tried to put it to an end. He made speeches, did marches, and got arrested for civil rights. He did it all peacefully.
