Courage is standing up for someone or something you think is right even when people aren’t looking. Discrimination is showed in Mildred D. Taylor's book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry to Cassie and her family just because of their race. Cassie has to show courage throughout the book by standing up for Little Man on the first day of school, gaining Lillian Jean's trust, and standing up for herself in Barnetts Mercantile.

When Cassie stands up for Little Man on the first day of school, she understands why he says that he doesn't want his book. She knows the trouble she will get in with her teacher Miss Crocker and Mama when she stands up for Little Man. Cassie says on page 27 “Miz Crocker,” I said, I don’t want my book neither.” She says this because in the front cover of their books it has a chart that shows who has owned it and the condition it is in. It says nigra, very poor condition, and that is why Little Man doesn’t want his because he thinks it is not fair that they get the old worn out ones, and the white students get the brand new ones. This is why Cassie understands that Little Man doesn’t want his book, and how she stands up for him. She shows courage by this …show more content…

T.J gives Mr.Barnett their order, but he soon starts on a little white girls order before theirs, even though he got theirs first. “I think you forgot, but you was waiting on us ‘fore you was waiting on this girl here, and we been waiting a good while now for to get back.” pg. 111 Cassie says this because she does not understand that white people always in this time period go before african americans almost everywhere. She also says this because she is so young that her parents haven’t told her about how the world was back in that time period. Cassie shows courage by doing this because she shows Mr. Barnett what she believes even though he is a grown white
