Courage in The Crucible
We should act with courage. We should act with courage because courage enhances our moral being. In The Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, Giles Corey shows great courage and strength. Elizabeth Proctor explains to John Proctor Giles death, “Great stones they lay upon his chest until he plead aye or nay. With a tender smile for the old man: They say he give them but two words. “More weight,” he says. And died.”(Miller 125). Giles Corey has the option to save himself from death if he gave the name of another, but he stays true to himself and others. Elizabeth Proctor when accused of being a witch vocalizes, “If you think I am one, then I say there are none”(Miller 66). Elizabeth knows she is not a witch, and defends herself with a risky comment. In The Crucible, Reverend Hale realizes that the court has made an error then claims, “If you think God wills you raise rebellion, Mr. Danforth, you are mistaken.”(Miller 120). John comes back to Salem the day of executions, because he feels that he has been a part of everyone being put on trial. He continues to tell the court that they have made a big mistake and that many are innocent. Since Hale had the courage to come back and try to get people to confess to being a witch, he almost saves John Proctor. Betty is brought to court to tell the truth about Abigail's tricks, “Your honor, you seemed to believe them, and I- It were only sport in the beginning, sir, but then the whole world cried spirits, spirits, and I-I promise you, Mr. Danforth, I only thought I saw them but I did not.”(Miller 100).
