I wish to apply for the Humanities and Social Sciences Teacher position that was advertised on the Education Department Job Board. I am confident that I possess unique qualities that would make me a real asset for Butler College. I know that in your Year 11 ATAR Modern History course next year you are studying the Capitalism the American Experience unit and the Nazism in Germany unit. I am extremely familiar with both of these ATAR units having taught both them this year in my Year 11 ATAR class. I have really enjoyed teaching both of these units and was excited about the possibility of teaching them again next year. As this would afford me the opportunity to refine my teaching practice, as I could make changes to my approach to teaching some of the concepts in the units based on student feedback and my reflection on my own performance teaching these units. Improving literacy standards at SIDE has focussed on enhancing students’ vocabularies through the active use of glossaries, encouraging the use of more complex sentences and structuring paragraphs correctly. I believe that the development of students’ literacy and numeracy skills is pivotal to their learning in all other areas. This is why I volunteered to be the Humanities and Social Science representative on the Literacy and Numeracy Committee at SIDE. I have enjoyed working alongside the members of this committee, as it has allowed me to consider the literacy demands of the Humanities subjects in a new light. Through considering the literacy demands of tasks presented in the Humanities, I have been able to help students build greater more advanced literacy skills. On a personal level, being part of a professional learning community has allowed me to enhance my teaching. Students who possess high levels of numeracy and literacy have wider opportunities available to them throughout their lives.
