A Crab-Eating Fox and a Maned Wolf’s Relationship There are many different kinds of animals in the Amazon Basin. Throughout this paper the author will be telling about the Crab-Eating Fox and the Maned Wolf. They are both very unique animals that live in the Amazon Basin. For the thesis statement, the author will be joining the two animals together. The thesis statement is: the Crab-Eating Fox and the Maned Wolf are both unique animals in which their name does not match with what they are called. Its tail length is two hundred eighty to four hundred ninety mm. Its shoulder length is seven hundred forty to nine hundred mm. The Maned Wolf weighs about twenty to twenty-six kg. The average lifespan of the Maned Wolf is about fifteen years (Nowak). Two unique characteristics of the Maned Wolf is they have long legs, so they can be able to see over the tall grasses while they run (Nowak). Another is the mane on the Maned Wolf’s neck stands erect when danger is near (Harvey). Maned Wolves have a golden-red coat with a pointed muzzle and erect ears. Their eyes, ears, and mouth are black. Their appearances look just like the red fox. They have long, black, skinny legs that are used to run fast and stand high. Their “mane”, inside part of ears, and tip of their tail is white. They also have a black line that goes from the back of their head down to their shoulders (Earle). The gestation period is sixty-two to sixty-eight days. They have about two to five babies. Also they carry their young to safety by using their mouth to grab them. The nursing duration is weaned by fifteen weeks. The Maned Wolf is monogamy just like the Crab-Eating Fox. It means that they mate more than once. They live in a cerrado, a large, open area that is woodlands or savannas. They also live in swamps. The population is near extinction. They are getting killed off by humans. Also they get eaten by other animals (Nowak). Maned Wolves are omnivores, so they eat meat and vegetables. They eat rodents, other mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, fruit, and other vegetable matter (Nowak). They also travel in groups and hunt by themselves. Although other canids like to hunt big prey, the Maned Wolf likes smaller prey better. Even though they eat a lot of meat, over half of their diet is fruits and vegetables. Captive Maned Wolves were originally fed meat and gained kidney stones, but now they feed them more fruits and vegetables (Animal corner). The Maned Wolf has multiple unique relationship with other animals. They have a relationship with a kidney worm which they got from eating only meat. Also they have a relationship with leaf cutter ants. When the Maned Wolf uses the bathroom on the leaf cutter ant’s nest, they use that fertilizer to fertilize their fungus gardens (Between Blinks).Since there is only one type of Maned Wolf the author likes the Maned Wolf because it has long legs like the author does.
