If Thomas the turtle could pick a least favorite character in this book, he would definitely choose Mike Deluca. In the novel Crash, by Jerry Spinelli, Mike is seen as the jerky sidekick of the book’s main character, Crash Coogan. Crash and Mike used to be best friends, but Crash soon saw that being a horrible person is not the best thing you can be. Mike, however, stayed his same old, cruel self. In fact, Mike is such a vile human that some of his actions may have persuaded Crash to change his own behavior! Overall, Mike is tough, but also disrespectful, and straight up mean.
One thing about Mike that is immediately apparent is that he is tough. Even when he first meets Crash, he shows this trait. When Crash consults Mike asking if he was from North Dakota, he replies with, “What if i am? You got a problem?” This shows that Mike is truly tough to start with, and Crash had nothing to do with persuading him to be this way. In this novel, he constantly shows this trait in almost everything he does. On page 33, for example, he and Crash laugh intensely at Penn’s second hand clothes and gloating about their own expensive sneakers.After Penn says that he may have gotten his clothes at second time around, it says, “Mike and I both exploded. We turned away and pretended we were having coughing fits”. In another occasion, as soon as Mike learns about Penn, he insists on bullying him. After Crash says that he used to mess with Penn, but doesn't bother anymore, Mike proclaims, “Well, that's gonna change”. Because Mike immediately decides to bully Penn, you can tell hes mean because only a bad person would do such a thing. Lastly, Mike shows his meanness by pulling another prank on Penn.
