Horror is a genre that creates fear and terror by scaring the audience. Human’s worst fears and nightmares are recreated into films to re-induce the fear and then sold out at film premiers? Horror can creates creatures from something as little as an imagination. A source that I found that relates with horror and my concentration of the unknown and unexpected is a documentary called Crash of the Century. This documentary was created by Discovery World based on a true aviation disaster. Some may consider Crash of the Century a horror documentary while others do not but the real question is what is a horror documentary and does it apply to Crash of the Century ? Bill Nichols explores how documentaries are created in Introduction To Documentary but more specifically Nichols explores what he calls a voice, “Voice, then, is a question of how the logic, argument, or viewpoint of a film gets conveyed to us.” (Nichols 43). Crash of the Century has a voice and it gets conveyed to us through the use of ethos, pathos, and logos. A statement is shown at the start of Crash of the Century that it is a true story, based on eyewitness accounts, and recordings from the cockpits and control tower. The documentary also does a great job at showing the views of the different flight crews and the air traffic controller by visually showing what each crew was doing throughout the day which assists the audience in credibility towards the voice. These representations of ethos confirms the creditably of what the audience is about experience, but also the timeline structured documentary assist in the audience in understanding the disaster. Crash of the Century expresses pathos by the visual aspect of the lights of the KLM plane accelerating towards Pan Am, tail scrape of KLM (sparks shown), and finally the horrific crash with an impressive amount of fire. The documentary appeals to logos by the use of actual cockpit and control tower audio. These elements are first expressed in the first minute and fifty seconds lay the path for Crash of the Century to express and evolve the horror experienced by the 650 passengers and multiple crews involved in this disaster by using a voice. Nichols expresses a great point of how the voice can come from anyone and in the case of Crash of the Century we see many survivors appear and talk about the disaster from their view point inside the Pan Am plane.
