Among the films and books I have studied, I have chosen four texts that I’ll be using to create connections between them. The four text I have chosen are the play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare, the film The Untouchables directed by Brian De Palma, the film Divergent directed by Neil Burger and the book The Hunger Games is written by Suzanne Collins. In these four texts, the theme you can’t always trust the authorities significantly connects between all four text from different events and characters. Al Capone was given authority because of the strong and scary character he was known for and how he can manage to perform hidden acts without getting caught. “You can get further with a kind word and a gun than you can with just a kind word.” Al Capone uses violence to remain in control and gets what he wants. From his hidden acts of supplying illegal liquor, he was rewarded millions of dollars. This was relieved when he was caught in the act and word went out to the public, resulting in many people who knew Al Capone losing trust and interest in him. But money was easily used by Al Capone to gain and remain in control from the most powerful humans known such as the police, the government and even judges which allowed him many times to get away from his acts.This relates to today’s society where money can buy you anything, even the power to gain authority. Many people in today’s society use the money to get away from horrific acts they committed and avoid jail time, which is supported by some judges and the governments. This puts rage in people they may have affected when committing the crimes, but for the judge and many who have authority there is nothing those affected people can do to get their justice. This resulted in Elliot doing whatever he can do to send Al Capone to jail for the hidden acts he’s done for his own purpose. Elliot is a Federal agent who assembled a personal team to bring Chicago crime boss Al Capone to justice. Both characters were not in good terms because of the thought of someone interfering with Al Capone work brought Al Capone to do whatever it took to get Elliot and his team to disappear so he could continue doing his dirty hidden acts. “Somebody messes with me, I'm gonna mess with him.” Al Capone said which shows he has the power to stop anyone who comes in his way. The society at the time was not allowed to drink alcohol because of the law created by Al Capone, but instead of that living as a law. Al Capone takes illegal liquor and transport them to gain money and more power for himself. This left the public worried about the authority and how they used their powers the wrong ways. Elliot achieved his goal to bring Al Capone down by finding evidence which resulted in Al Capone being found guilty of twenty-one counts of tax evasion and was sentenced to 11 years in jail. The theme, justice will prevail was successful in the film and brought the public to celebrate with liquor knowing there is no evil gang ruling over the law anymore.
