Creation Myth Motifs Seen in Today’s Society As impossible as it may seem, common creation myths that we see share many specific similarities. Nobody knows how or why these myths are so alike, which makes countless people wonder if the creators of these myths had some sort of connection in order to learn and grow from each other. These myths are labeled as such because there is not enough evidence to prove that they are true stories, so this is why we still question whether or not these godlike figures roamed the earth and sky together. In most creation myths, such as Genesis, the Rig Veda, and the Enuma Elish, logic is used by the creators to form earth and sky. I believe that this motif is a part of so many myths because it shows that the creators were very certain on how they wanted their earth to look; they had to think about ways in which it could be livable and ways in which it could be unique. In Genesis, Earth was created on the first day by God announcing, “Let there be light,” because it was his top priority and he would need it to finish his work. In the Yoruban creation myth, Obatala was given step-by-step rules to create his earth, calling for him to hang from a gold chain, pour sand from a snail’s shell into the mist below, release a white hen, and plant a palm nut. Some myths involved the creators killing competition and using their bodies to create the earth and sky while others mention the separation of beings in order to create the earth and sky. In Genesis, God’s humans had to be taught better ways of survival, in the Incan myth, Pachacamac sent his children to teach his humans how to be civilized, and in the Chinese myth, Nuwa taught her people to populate the earth. If humans weren’t taught how to live and survive, we would be living completely differently than we do now. This motif shows that the creators were proud of their knowledge and wanted their humans to benefit from it. Much like these myths, today’s people teach young children right from wrong and how to live properly, while past humans were taught how to create an entire society, today’s humans are taught how to maintain and improve these
