The Sistine Chapel has many famous sections, but the most famous is Michelangelo’s “Creation of Adam”. The first time I laid eyes on it, I was amazed at the clarity, beauty, and message it sent to me. The Creation of Adam is generally believed to represent the quote "God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him" (Genesis 1:27). It marks the beginning of all mankind as I see it and as God himself wants us to know it. There can never be a better work of art to replicate the details that this one portrays. This beautiful piece is located on page 503 in our Art 102’s book. The Sistine Chapel is located in Vatican City, Italy and the artwork was painted circa 1511-1512. It measures 570 cm wide by 280 cm high. That's about 18 feet 8.4 inches by 9 feet 2.2 inches. The Creation of Adam varies from the typical creation scenes painted up till that period. Here, two human figures control the scene: God on the right, and Adam on the left. God is revealed inside a cloud made up of cloth and other characters. God himself is sustained with angels who fly without the use of wings, but whose airlift is made clear by the drapery that lashes out from underneath them. God is illustrated as a mature, muscular, man with grey hair and a long beard which moves in response to the forward movement. And I notice that he isn’t wearing a crown or fancy clothing, but instead he wears a simple tunic which shows much of his arms and legs.
