Darkness Awaiting

John was fiddling around with his horse’s straps, tightening and adjusting them to keep his mind occupied as his hands moved to do anything but pull him up onto his horse. Today was the day of battle, and John was relying on his friend, William, to keep him safe and sane. Half a league raced onwards into the open and sparse gulley that would lead them to their death.
The air began to whip past John, as the dust and sun spurted up into his eyes, making it difficult for him to see clearly. BANG. BANG. BANG. Cannons to the right of them, cannons to the left of them and cannons in front of them all volleyed and thundered as they made their way through the desert. Half a league was slowly diminishing as the deafening cries from the soldiers could have been heard a mile away.
Turning his head around, just enough to catch a glimpse of his fellow soldiers, John’s face dropped as his eyes stared blankly as left right and centre lay soldiers dead and wounded on the ground. Checking to his left, his heart settled as William remained there. His head solely focused on the battle awaiting, unfased by the stench and reality war brought with it. The courage he displayed, pushed John on.
