Art class helped Melinda survive in many ways throughout the story. One way that art class helped her was how to express her feelings and emotions freely. Melinda had always been the shy and quiet girl because she would never want to talk about her situations in life with anyone. Mr. Freeman was a teacher who stood out from the others because of his unique take on teaching and treating his students. He treats his students like intelligent beings, and he never looks down on them just because they’re younger than him. He shows his kids the reality of this world, and all the stuff that people go through as they start maturing. In addition, he is a very unbiased teacher who doesn’t go around agreeing with everything that the school board says or does for the school. He even gives chances to his students to make them feel like they are doing the right thing. Mr. Freeman was the man who convinced her to stop running away from the past.
