He goes out of his way to perform services to support the Confederate cause. One day, a gray-clad soldier appears at his house and tells Farquhar that Union soldiers in the area have been repairing the railroads, including the one over Owl Creek Bridge. Interested, Farquhar asks if it is possible to sabotage the bridge, to which the soldier replies that he could burn it down. When the soldier leaves, it is revealed that he is a Union scout who has lured Farquhar into a trap, as anyone caught interfering with the railroads would face
After the Captain gives the signal, the Sergeant moves from the plank and Farquhar is suspended from the bridge by the rope. Farquhar was unable to join the Confederate Army, but still wants to aid their cause. A confederate soldier rode to his house and gives Farquhar a mission to burn the Owl Creek Bridge, but then it is revealed that the soldier is a Federal scout. Farquhar became unconscious and awoke to the pressure in his neck feeling immense pain and suffocation. The rope snaps and he plummets into the creek below.

The story is based on Peyton Farquhar, a plantation owner being prepared for execution by hanging from an Alabama bridge during the american civil war. Farquhar is a confederate supporter that learns that the union troops have taken over the owl creek railroad bridge. A union soldier in disguise told Farquhar to burn down the bridge, he of course falls for this for the soldiers trick because he doesn’t believe the war is fair. He was caught by the union guards and sent to be executed immediately.

He tells Farquhar that they have reached The Owl Creek Bridge. The "soldier" also explains that if anyone is caught interfering with the railroads or any of the construction, they will be hanged. Farquhar jokingly asked the soldier how would it be possible to destroy the bridge. The "soldier" tells him it would be easy to burn down the bridge. As part one comes to an ending the author reveals that the "soldier" was actually a federal scout, in other words a Yankee spy.

The story had me intrigued by the different directions it could take you, but it all made sense in the end, and I discovered you sometimes have to dig a little deeper to find the whole truth about someone. The story causes the reader to visualize the preciousness of life itself and takes the reader on a roller coaster of different feelings on as to what is going on because of Bierce’s unique style by telling the story through visual aids and highly descriptive language. The story begins on a railroad bridge, where many northern troops stand with Peyton Farquhar standing on the edge of the bridge on a plank of wood in his last moments of life. Farquhar; being the man he is, was unable to join the military due to adverse circumstances. Instead he went on to continue on in a normal lifestyle as a plantation owner, but still heavily supported the southern agenda.
