As the 104th moves on from their real first test of battle, Stash is relieved he made it out of there alive. "Why must you do this right now?" Said the grim looking peasant as he ducked his head in fear of staring the knight in the eye. The young man with perfectly chiseled facial features gave the grim man a demeaning stare. "Why you ask? Well because if you do not pay your taxes like you are supposed to, your head will be on the tip of my sword here. " The man bowed his head like a scared puppy, and he backed up with a hurry.
When Scout and Jem are sneaking into Boo Radley’s house, it is described with “a ramshackle porch ran the width of the house; there were two doors and two dark windows between the doors. Instead of a column, a rough two-by-four supported one end of the roof,” (Lee 53). These details suggest that there may be something ominous in the house, and as the children explore, the story is filled with intense fear. The author uses this word choice to create a sense of mystery and tension in the story as the readers are intrigued about the actions that will follow. Later in the story during the time that the kids are attacked by Bob Ewell, Lee describes the setting as, “the night was still.
Finally, this novel demonstrates how Scout’s character develops in various ways once she gets the chance to stand on Radley’s porch because she sees the world from his perspective due to why he disclosed himself from everyone else. As she stands there she also comes to understand that Boo was not the ghout that she and Jem have assumed from the very start and she certainly couldn’t believe that he saved her life. Besides she now gets to understand what her father meant by ‘you can 't understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it’ (page 39) The understanding Scout has finally had of the way people are perceived and the way they actually are. It shows that she has learnt what many people in their life never learn which is to have empathy for others.

When Scout stands alone in front of the window on the Radley’s porch everything seems to click in her mind as she says, “It was still summertime, and the children came closer. A boy trudged down the sidewalk dragging a fishing-pole behind him. A man stood waiting with his hands on his hips. Summertime, and his children played in the front yard with their friend, enacting a strange little drama of their own invention. Now, your unit is being surrounded, and it is finally time to surrender.
