I hear the whizzing of a shell and instantly hit the floor; it lands forty yards from our trench and explodes with a loud bang. I think to myself that there will be a bombardment tonight. Weird, it doesn't have the same ring as when Kat said it. I get up and continue walking, and I stumble upon a young recruit huddled in the corner. He was lying on the floor quivering; I knew something was wrong. I walked over to him and said, "Hey comrade, are you doing okay? You seem a bit shaken up." He didn't say anything, and only continued to stare off into the distance. Another shell came in, and he looked terrified. "I can help you if you have a problem." I say to him, "I've been through everything a soldier can go through, except dying of course." I walked closer to him and put my hand in front of his face, and finally he snapped out of his trance.
