On that day more than 12 and half million shares of stock were sold, which was triple the usual amount. Next, over the following 4 days, the stock market prices fell 23 percent. In 1933, the unemployment had risen from 3 percent to 25 percent of nation’s workforce and those who were able to keep their jobs faced harsh reductions in wages.

The effects of the crash were extreme and affected the living and working conditions of Americans across the Country. People and families were not the only ones affected by the Great Depression. Following the conclusion of World War I, countries in Europe struggled to rebuild their war-shambled economies and societies. On the other hand, WWI had seemingly ushered in a new era of prosperity for the Americans. The 1920s, better known as “The Roaring Twenties,” transformed and shaped modern-day American society. However, under the glittering facade of prosperity and fortune, the US economy began to decline as a series of internal failures threatened to undermine the nation. While many believe that the unprecedented crash of the stock market on October 29, 1920, better known as Black Tuesday, was the cause of the dramatic economic downturn of the century, long-term causes contributed highly to the impending catastrophe.

Feelings of sympathy and concern are hard to achieve when relation to a situation cannot transpire. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck delivered the conditions and gruesome reality of the migrant and farm workers during the “dust bowl” years. Through Steinbeck’s novel, his use of symbolism and explicit language brings attention in a manner that was different and contemporary for its time of publication.
