Alexa Harlem Mrs. Mercer College Writing - 4 11 September 2015 Question #1 The Other Wes Moore is a novel that uses the structure informative and narrative which provides information about the characters throughout the book and tells the story. This informative and narrative structure contributes to the overall effect of the book because Wes Moore the author explains how the two Wes Moore’s lives changed into completely different paths. One Wes went to military school and the other stayed home and dealt drugs. One wes kills a police officer and is arrested and the other one visits him in prison.
Many of the boys pretended that negative interactions and stereotyping did not affect them, but their bravo personas only masked the fear inside. Fear made the boys feel weaker and less masculine, so they would deviate from social norms to regain respect and dignity among their peers and for themselves. Routine patterns of punishment eventually lead the boys to develop an altered view of thoughts, beliefs, and ways of behaving in order to survive the tough life set them. In 1995, political scientist, John Dilution, introduced the phrase super-predator. He referred to the coming of super-predators as kids who arise from inner black neighborhoods who created bloodbaths in America’s streets. One year later in 1996, Hillary Clinton labelled young black children as super-predators as well. Ever since Dilulio and Clinton began spreading the term, “super-predators”, it has settled its place in today’s politics and the on-going debate on effects of race on incarceration rates. This adds on to the long living myth that young black children are at a higher risk for developing more violent attitudes and personas.

The second time Cole made a huge foolish choice was when he was on the island and burned down his shelter and all of this supplies. After Edwin had left Cole alone on the island, Cole decided to try to escape. Growing up in NYC, one hears reports of these young children losing their lives to gang violence or simply as innocent bystanders. Even if these children do have parents, they also have a large number of close friends whose death may have a significant impact on them. Trauma can affect anyone, but most of these young children are unable to deal with the suffering. Thus you see them relying on carrying out violent acts repeatedly in revenge, using drugs or alcohol, or acting rebelliously. In this discussion, drug use and alcohol consumption are the two most relevant topics.
