In the beginning of the book, Bryce’s grandfather is trying to show him that to know someone really well, he has to have gone beneath the surface, but he doesn’t understand what his grandfather is showing. This is Bryce’s first real conversation Bryce had with his grandfather. He is upset that it’s not about getting to know him better, but that it’s about Juli and the newspaper article on the sycamore tree being cut down. “Granddad, you don’t understand that girl is a royal pain. She’s a show-off, she’s a know-it-all, and she is pushy beyond belief... She’s been stalking me since the second grade!... He has been thinking about her so much. Because of the article, he has been looking at Juli with a different perspective. Every day, he sees her as a new person, and all he does is think about her. Each time Bryce seems to get more confused about Juli’s personality, but actually he has been getting closer to realizing that she is special. At the end of the book, Bryce’s grandfather notices a change in Bryce’s behavior, and talks to him to see what is going on with him. “No, I mean...’ I turned to him. ‘It started with that stupid newspaper article. And I don’t know... I’ve been weirded out ever since. She doesn’t look the same, she doesn’t sound the same, she doesn’t even seem the same like the same person to me!’ I stared at the window at the Bakers’. ‘She’s...she is just different.’’ (p.187) Bryce thinks Juli is the one changing, but his grandfather proves him wrong. Even though Juli has changed her opinion about Bryce, Bryce is actually the one who’s changed his whole perspective of the world. He shows that all he had to do was open his eyes to see the real Juli. The end of the book’s tone is forgiveness because Bryce is finally realizing how mean he was to Juli.
