Would you consider yourself a thermometer or a thermostat? You may ask yourself, what’s the difference or what does that mean? The inmates that are currently incarcerated in the American Justice System know exactly what that means. With the help of many programs created for these convicts, they can proudly say that they are thermostats. Project P.R.I.D.E, Books Through Bars, and Sing Sing’s Education Behind Bars program allow inmates to be active in the outside world while remaining in jail and become better people overall. These programs are at risk of being cut because of federal budget cuts, but they should not be eliminated at the expense of the hopeful prisoners that respect and value the programs dearly. Hudson Link permits criminal justice reform which is crucial in making the society a better place. When interviewing several inmates one described the experience as, “transforming from ugly caterpillars to butterflies” (Part 1). This shows how the transformation between who they were before and who they are now is drastic. The inmates have done some shoddy actions which proceeded in them going to prison, but now they have the prospect to make themselves better, superior people and change their lives. The valedictorian of that years graduates said he finally made his mother proud and did something good with his life. (Part 2). Now, after they serve their time their transition into the community will be easier with an Associate's Degree, and be able to make a living for themselves.
