In the story Crispin, The Cross of Lead, written by Avi, the main characters are Crispin a young boy, Bear a large experienced man, and John Aycliffe a vile, cruel, malevolent, beast of a steward. The main setting of the story is in England during the medieval period. In the beginning of the story, Crispin a young naive, immature, and malnourished boys, living on the outskirts of stromford, In the lands of Lord Furnival's, mom Asta suddenly dies and Crispin in a rage storms out into the woods. The main problem in the book is Crispin is accused of crimes he didn’t commit. When he one day stumbles across a mammoth man praying in an abandoned church. The man named Bear is caring, noble, and has a strange spirit of duality, as a Bear would. The solution is Crispin after he is bound to Bear. They head off to Great Wexly because Bear needs some one. Crispin with his curious nature gets in too. At the end of the story Bears meeting. Crispin is dumbfounded by the sheer size of Great Wexly. Bear is taken into custody by John Aycliffe where he is tortured. The ignorant Crispin forces John Aycliff to let them go. Crispin leaves his cross of lead on John Aycliffe’s dead body and walks out of Great Wexly.
