The next chapter was Carrie McCandless viewpoint on traveling to see where her older brother Christopher McCandless died. When Carrie was in the helicopter flying to the ominous bus, she could not believe that Chris had backpacked through such terrain and lived off the land for one hundred days. However, she always knew that if Chris put his mind to something, he would always achieve it. Finally, she saw the rundown school bus where her brother had died. She tried to be strong but failed, and wept.
In “Cinderella”, by the Grimm Brothers, the authors utilize a multitude of fairy tale genre conventions such as frequent usage of rhetorical devices, magical creatures, and the classic “Happy Ever After” fairy tale ending, to emphasize the importance of genuineness and the dangers of pursuing superficiality. The authors use several rhetorical devices such as symbolism and juxtaposition
She utilises a diptych structure which portrays the contrast of a child’s naive image of death to the more mature understanding they obtain as they transition into adulthood. This highlighted in ‘I Barn Owl’ where the use of emotive language, “I watched, afraid/ …, a lonely child who believed death clean/ and final, not this obscene”, emphasises the confronting nature of death for a child which is further accentuated through the use of enjambment which conveys the narrator’s distress. In contrast, ‘II Nightfall’, the symbolism of life as a “marvellous journey” that comes to an end when “night and day are one” reflects the narrator’s more refined and mature understanding of mortality. Furthermore the reference to the “child once quick/to mischief, grown to learn/what sorrows,… /no words, no tears can mend” reaffirms the change in the narrator’s perspective on death through the contrast of a quality associated with innocence, “mischief”, with more negative emotions associated with adulthood, “sorrows”.
Baecker contrasts the original story The Lost Woman of San Nicolas with Island of the Blue Dolphins. First, the analysis highlights special traits that O´Dell modifies to adapt Karana´s character making her likable to young readers. Additionally, Baecker compares Karana´s archetypal with other´s novels female characters ´´ The archetype of the young, orphaned virgin in need of rescue by the handsome prince finds its way into many stories…such heroines as Snow White, Cinderella, Ariel, and Belle´´ (Baecker 197). All these characters share features but, at the same time, their stories are different.
In How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Thomas C. Foster claims that all literature stems from other literature and in fact all literature is a part of one large work. A large amount of authors borrow ideas from other literary works. Of course, the seemingly most obvious author to borrow from being William Shakespeare. On the contrary, Foster believes that most of the exceptional Shakespeare quotes are overused and referencing Shakespeare can lead to something which Foster calls the “high brow” effect which means that referring to Shakespeare can make the author seem pompous. Other authors and literary works can be borrowed from as well, but many are not as widely known or are well-known now but won’t be for long.
“It was covered with a film of Paris green sprinkled to kill the rat, and the screech owls had built a nest inside it” (Hurst 353). The tone of the “Scarlet Ibis” is mournful and melancholy from start to finish about a boy who struggled through his life trying to be like his older brother. Through the use of figurative language, imagery, and symbolism James Hurst wove a tale that touched everyone's hearts.
Specifically in “Cinderella”, there are three easily identified character archetypes, which include the earth mother, star-crossed lovers, and damsel in distress. Although it is not a human character, the earth mother is recognized as “her mother's grave beneath the hazel-tree” (Hunt). Her mother’s grave is a great example of the earth mother because whenever Cinderella comes in contact or cries to the grave, it grants whatever she is in need of, which is also known as the fairy godmother in the modern version. Cinderella and the prince share a romantic relationship that is not tolerated by anyone because of the difference in their social statuses; therefore, they are seen as star-crossed lovers. When the father says, “she cannot possibly be the bride” and the step-mother says, “oh, no, she is much too dirty, she cannot show herself” it shows how cold-hearted and unaccepting of their love they are (Hunt).
Lorraine V. Hansberry Author Lorraine Hansberry, who is considered one of the Great American authors, wrote during the Modernist period. She wrote “A Raisin in the Sun” in 1959. In this work, we can see evidence of the characteristics, themes and style identified with the Modernist movement which was extant in American letters between 1850’s and after WWII. Lorraine Hansberry wrote during this time period of American literature, and such, remains one of the most identifiable and iconic writers of her time. Lorraine Hansberry was born on May 19, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois.
Thereafter, Panttaja explains in-depth about how Cinderella is not truly motherless, while describing what in the fairy tale represents Cinderella’s mother. Shortly after, Panttaja compares the mother and the stepmother of Cinderella, believing that both of the mothers have the same attitude to help their daughters achieve their goals (288). Next, Panttaja questions the morals of Cinderella by explaining magic being the theme of the fairy tale instead of the “alleged theme of romance.” In conclusion, Panttaja used multiple examples, including fairy tales and mythology, to explain how the main character, in this case Cinderella, uses power and manipulation to succeed in the goals they’re for
The text of the book Cinder Edna was organized into simple sentences and short paragraphs. The organization was sufficient for what the book is telling by providing adequate detail in each paragraph. Descriptive language was used throughout the entire book which made having short paragraphs and simple sentences acceptable. One example of a literary tool being employed to make the story more vivid is, “Cinderella sat among the cinders and sighed.” This literary tool is alliteration and it helps support the story by allowing the reader to picture what Cinderella must have felt like in that moment.
In the novel the author uses the elements of good and evil from fairy tales to have an opposite effect in the novel. In Little Red Riding Hood the reader can see that the girl plays the good character as she wants to help her sick grandmother. The wolf is seen as the evil character as he wants to destroy the girl and the grandmother. Little Red Riding Hood gains power over the wolf with help of the hunter, due to that she defeats the wolf alone “Red Riding Hood, however, quickly fetched great stones with which they filled the wolf 's belly, … , but the stones were so heavy that he collapsed at once, and fell dead”. This is a similar case for Beauty and the Beast.
In Margaret Atwood’s poem “There Was Once”, Atwood uses irony to point out the societal problems within the genre of fairy tales. Charles Perrault, the author of the short story “The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood”, writes about fantastic creatures, magic, and love, following the generic conventions of fairy tales. When compared to Perrault’s short story “The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood”, Atwood’s poem both compliments and contrasts Perrault’s. These two texts, although similar, offer different views on the genre of fairy tales. Margaret Atwood’s satirical poem, “There Was Once”, aims to disrupt the generic conventions of a traditional fairy tale.
The tale of "Catskin", rewritten by Jacobs in the 19th century, has all the essential features to be considered a fairy tale: a good and an evil character, a life full of struggles for the protagonist, a happy ending and, most importantly, a moral lesson. The significance of "Catskin" seems to be that, although life, at times, can be dreadful, determination, perseverance and patience will eventually determine one 's success. In the tale, for example, the protagonist never capitulates, neither when she has to escape a forced marriage, nor when she lives in the castle, continually mistreated by the old cook. Eventually, though, Catskin seems to earn her happy ending thanks to her virtues and beauty. However, there is more to the story than meets
Most of the children read about many fairy tales, especially Snow Whites, Sleeping beauty, and Cinderella when they grew up. It is a surprising fact that to discover a hidden, unexpected political intention in the simple plot of fairy tales. That is a feminization of woman. The fairy tale world suggests a male-centered patriarchy as an ideal basic society and impliedly imply that man and woman need to have a proper attitude toward this opinion. However, Jewett’s A White Heron describes a new perspective of fairy tale’s plot.
The art of storytelling is at the heart of fairy tales. Since the beginning, fairy tales have captivated readers with its magical worlds and enchanted characters. Quintessential to fairy tales are destined happy endings and the clear division between good and evil. The nature of these stories creates distorted perceptions that do not align with reality, making it difficult to distinguish between reality and illusion. This is portrayed in Terry Pratchett’s Witches Abroad, in which Lilith Weatherwax struggles to free herself from the fictitious world she has fabricated.
