To begin, “Lord Of The Flies” by William Golding, published in 1954, is about a group of boys who were on an airplanes crashes into a deserted island. The boys are left alone with the captain and crew are killed, so they elect a leader, Ralph, and fight for their survival by using resources they find on the island. Each boy is given certain duty so that their society is functional. Although Ralph tries to impose order and delegate responsibility people do not listen and to have fun instead. This leads to Ralph 's rules are being ignored and challenged by Jack to turn the boys into savages. Ralph gradually becomes an outcast and is hunted by Jack 's army of boys. Just as Ralph is about to be killed by the naval officer arrives on the island to rescue them. Golding 's novel shows the boundary between human reason and animal instinct, by showing the groups of boys falling out of civilization and into savagery. With the groups of boys falling out of civilization, one can see that no matter how civilized people are the nature of animal instinct still remains because even though the human race is evolved people still have animal-like roots. “Lord Of The Flies” shows that humans can revert to savage ways, which is backed up with psychological studies on humans reverting to savages, also known as out first instincts way in order to survive.
To continue, in “Lord of the Flies” one can find an example of humans reverting to savage ways. At the beginning of “Lord of the Flies”, the boys begin as civil human being who with a democratic idea of deciding who is the leader of the group. Savagery in “Lord of the Flies” compared to today 's society in that the boys largely choose savagery over society. This is very different from today 's civilized world because most people live their lives with no savagery present at all. In the book the whole island chooses savagery over civilization. A scientific study set to answer this question concluded that research suggests that our intuitive responses, or first instincts, tend to lead to cooperation rather than selfishness. Under today’s circumstances however, most people have little choice to choose savagery because the government has ways of enforces their law and without the government society would fall apart and we would revert back to our first instincts as they did in “Lord Of the Flies.” Most people are not able to govern themselves which is why the boy turn to savages over time in the book, even if it means a moraless quality of life. This is a concept called social entropy. Social entropy is a sociological theory that evaluates social behaviours using a method based on the second law of thermodynamics. In a closed-loop social system the entropy in the social structure must increase as time passes. As time passes an anarchy would rule the streets before small tribes would set up and compete for dominance as they did is the past history of
