Critical Thinking and Ethics are two different things when referring to philosophy. According to the book “An Examined Life, Critical Thinking and Ethics Today”, when these two concepts are mixed together they are not only related but essential to each other. Critical Thinking explains why people make arguments and they come across with some common fallacies. The book teaches us how to construct, analyze and evaluate important arguments where our thoughts are different from others and vice versa. The way we resolve these arguments is the key to the success or failure of proving a point of view. According to the book is a concerning question of the right thing to do and the right way to live. In here the elements of moral decisions are considered such as the act in question, the consequences of the act and the moral agent that the person is executing. These are the steps that will help us explain what´s right from wrong. Today´s Ethical issues such as euthanasia, abortion, immigration and many others are the ones needed in Critical Thinking with a moral argument. In order to understand all these it is important to understand diversity and that everybody is different. The word Egoism makes reference to an individual interest over other people. Ethical Egoism is described in the same way as one´s interest is more important than anyone else’s. Some people confuse it with Psychological Egoism where all behaviors are motivated by self-interest. In Ethical Egoism the argument is the one that focuses on what is best for the individual. Self-interest is the only principle that exists in Egoism. Everything is related to selfishness. Political leaders take a stand on an issue for no other reason than to get elected.
A consequence is defined as a result or effect of an action. The Consequentialist theory considers the act as the primary factor in making a judgment. The moral value of an action is determined by its consequences, not by laws. In this theory, the good is more important than the right. The outcome of the action whether they are good or bad is defined in the same way. Stealing is bad because if caught you can go to jail.
