At the time, King was serving as the President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization headquartered in Alabama, Georgia with approximately eighty-five affiliate organizations across the South. King and members of his staff responded to a call for help from a local affiliate in Birmingham inviting them to aid with a non-violent direct action program if deemed necessary. This was King’s justification for his physical presence in Birmingham during the time of his arrest.
