To start, a group of people that is represented on the ranch, is Blacks. During the 1930s, Blacks got treated as a lower class than whites did. In fact, “A large majority of white men in the south believed blacks needed to learn their place and stay there.” (Period 3). Crooks, a stablebuck in the novel, is a black man who faces the challenges that a black man would in 1930. One of his biggest challenges is that he is consistently not apart. For example, when all the other workers would go out to town, Crooks stays in his bunk and reads. He is aware of this discrimination and explains it to Lennie by saying, “ ‘Cause I’m black.
