Briley Belling Cine 101 The film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon takes place in China. The film has multiple themes taking place in its story such as romance, enemies and family, honor, and poison. The main characters in the story are Shu Lein, Li Mu Bai, Sir Te, and Jen. The story is in the main point of view of the character of the young girl, Jen. The actions of all of the characters are important to help tell the story, although Jen’s actions are the most important when creating the story and its underlining themes. Jen’s character first seems to just be an innocent young girl, showing doubtful feelings of her arranged marriage. The plot develops more and more in the film, after the “Green Destiny Sword” has been stolen. The film later reveals that the sword was stolen by Jen, and at that point the film reveals Jen’s martial arts skills, and how the theme of “poison” in the film has troubled her character. Jen is the disciple of the master, Jade Fox, who is responsible of the death of the master of Li Mu Bai and Fiancé of Shu Lein. Most of the lighting in the film appears natural. The lighting seems to be coming from daylight, moonlight, candles, and even portable lamps (used in scenes outside during the night). Although most of the lighting appears to be natural, the colors in the film are so vibrant that it appears that there must have been other lighting used in the film to give the effect. The lighting in the film helps create a story by adding a sort of tone, or feeling to the scenes in the film. Overall, many elements come together in the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to help develop the characters, plot, and themes.
