The poem, At Mornington was written by Australian poet, Gwen Harwood. It was published in 1975 under her own name. At Mornington is about a woman reminiscing about her past when she is with her friend. There are many themes explored in this poem including memory, death and time passing.
Transported into the future, Ray Bradbury paints a picture in the reader’s head of the Happy Life Home, filled with technology to fit everyday needs. A family, mom, dad, and two kids, start to slowly fall apart because of being surrounded with technology. In The Veldt, Bradbury uses multiple examples of author’s craft such as personification and tone or mood to help prove and point out a theme included in his story. His theme contained in the story is, influencing children with so much technology early on can not only stir up violent thoughts but, can also cause breaks between friend and family relationships. Nikky Finney's book Head Off and Split is a work of art in every sense. It combines both historical elements and personal elements. She shines the light on our countries habit of oppressing and enslaving African Americans. She masterfully weaves together the history of the time and her own memories in an unabashed way that lays bare the wrongdoings of our country. Forcing the reader to see part of our history that is often glossed and skimmed over in conventional textbooks.

These aspects of language and tone are embedded in the outer form of the poem, as the author forms an imaginative recreation of her young adult life, which directly impacts the reader to allow for an enjoyable simple read. The elements of language and tone formation ensure the translation of Alexander’s emotions or feelings of her youth for the audience to relate and understand. Franzen’s article Liking Is for Cowards, go for what hurt, compares the concept of love with techno-consumerism. It argues on how the grit of love is still better than the perfection of an elegant piece of technology which is also referred to as the perfect erotic relationship. The piece’s primary purpose is to make people understand the contrast between consumer related technology and real life and how this techno consumer relationship allows its user to control pretty much everything giving people a false sense of power while what love gives us is grit but it helps us become a better personas proven in the bird anecdote given by franzen. I agree with franzen in entirety and believe that the new tech-consumer world has us “working in jobs we don’t want to do to pay for the things we do not need”.

Fissured perception in Beachy Head Beachy Head, Charlotte Smith’s swan song of a poem, was published in 1807. The poem uses the following asymmetrical line structure “14-10-9-13-3” while using poetic devices such as enjambment, imagery, and allusion to create each stanza. A Step Away From Them occurs in one place, New York City. We know this because of the lines, “On/ to Times Square, / where the sign/blows smoke over my head” (13-14) and “the Manhattan Storage Warehouse.”

The first 2 lines of the poem present a paradoxical statement which shows the size of the apartment. “To stretch out arms and legs in your bed set in your narrow constant corner” is not only paradoxical in the sense that she is stretching out in a narrow and cramp area, but this also establishes the tension between the lady bed spacer and the apartment. Aside from this, the image of the arms and legs is also used as a metonym for the lady bed spacer, yet through the use of metonymy the she is objectified and reduced her entire being into just a body.
