The history of the city of Jerusalem in the Middle Ages takes it from the 10th century when it was under the rule of the Fatimid caliphate, to the Crusades and shifts in control brought by the Europeans, until the city was retaken by the “Khawarazmi Turks“ in 1244. The Medieval history of Jerusalem therefore was very complex. Many different countrys and religious groups all wanted to take over Jerusalem, but only one could. In this Essay I will firstly explain further background information of Jerusalem in more detail. In my second body paragraph I will also explain the Crusades, their impact on Jerusalem, their goals and achievements. And then finally in my last body paragraph I will explain the impact that the crusades had on the renaissance …show more content…

People that joined the crusades were blessed by god, and the pope also said that If they would fight, god would forgive their sins. The First crusade was led by Pope Urban the second and was not successful. The first crusade included children, women and men, and almost no knights and therefore didn’t fulfill the job. The next few crusades also weren’t very succesfull, until Richard the Lionheart decided to join one of them. Many People were inspired by the king Richard and joined him. His Crusades also contained a lot of knights and professional fighters, and therefore would be successful many people thought. So they set off for the journey over thousands of kilometers. As they arrived in the holy land they were able to take over the places at the coast such as Acre and Tripoli. Richard and his men were very strong and successful and therefore the Muslims leader Saladin(also known as the Merciful) got informed about richard setting off for the holy land. During the crusades many people died in the fights and therefore religions got changed a lot. People also learned to work together with other people too. The crusades also changed the history because by the time the Muslims had control of Jerusalem, they slowly started to take over Europe, and therefore if the Christians wouldn’t have fought back, the world would be different then we know it nowadays. In the renaissance and the reformation people also started to think more logically and didn’t want to start fights, because they didn’t want another series of crusades to happen because of one topic, because it seemed to make no sense to them at that
