Like many other Miamians, I was born into a family of Cuban-American background. From my father's side, both my grandfather and my grandmother (my Abuelo and Abuela) moved from Havana, Cuba to the United States, and on my mother's side, both my grandmother and grandfather (or Grammy and Paca, as I call them) are American. The combination of both Cuban and American backgrounds within my family allows me to experience the best of both worlds by being able to celebrate Noche Buena and frequently eat white rice and beans, while also hosting barbecues and 4th of July parties. As time passed, this idea transformed into my most important passion. Along with my love of math, science, and the medical field, this enthusiasm for helping others allowed me to focus on what I would like to do in my future: I plan to major in and assist in research in the Biomedical Engineering field, with hopes of continuing on to medical school, eventually becoming a trauma surgeon. Apart from my goal to improve the lives of others, there are other reasons as to why I want to become involved in medicine: I love the idea of facing new challenges every day, and I work incredibly well with others and in stressful environments. I want to attend a school that has a close-knit but diverse student body, a strong academic curriculum and support system, and a wide range of extracurricular activities I can be involved in that will help me develop my leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills while simultaneously allowing me to have fun.
