I was drawn to the Culinary Arts Program at St. Louis Job Corps because I have never enjoyed doing things that required me to sit for long periods of time studying things I would have no use for like book work. I knew many basic cooking skills from home and loved watching Quantum Kitchen on TV where they made totally unique dishes for every customer’s party. Culinary Arts lets me be creative and move around in ways other fields do not.
Culinary Arts is a great fit for me because I have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). I have to be doing something engaging or I lose interest and do other things that aren't as productive. Like in the classroom with book learning, the teacher had to always talk to me constantly about paying attention and not getting on my phone and texting. I don't have have that problem with Culinary Arts. When I'm in the kitchen, I'm always busy in the right way, chopping vegetables, handling cookware and ingredients, cooking a meal and then cleaning up. Even the down town of not being in the kitchen keeps my mind mentally stimulated because when you’re not I the kitchen you are thinking of creative ways to make an old dish new or to create a whole new dish altogether. I never get bored when I'm thinking about my next creation.
