In this dystopian society, the citizens are surveyed under a government that watches their every move. The Party's control over the past, plays a large role in controlling others. The main protagonist Winston faces oppression and goes through many lengths just to rebel against Big Brother. Big Brother is a figure who represents the Party’s power and authority. This figurine is plastered all around Oceania. Big Brother watches over the citizen’s from their Telescreens. The question is, why didn’t they just deflect against their ruler? In regards to 1984, the consequences of rebellion are horrific. In Oceania, if a member of the party or citizen commits a thought-crime, they get arrested and taken by custody. Anybody who is arrested due to committing thoughtcrime, will go through treacherous amounts of torture and will be eventually killed. They are brainwashed and manipulated into loving Big Brother. Not only will the person be killed, but they are then vaporized. Vaporization happens to someone who has been vaporized. Indeed, so long as they are not permitted to have standards of comparison, they never even become aware that they are oppressed. (Orwell 207) Orwell’s point is that they never revolt since they are oppressed. There is a theme throughout the novel where many acts of human rights are violated and dismissed. From just a touch of social issues, citizens have been violated of their privacy, freedom of speech, and religion. It comes to show how big the symbolism is for Big Brother.
