Meskwaki Tribe The Meskwaki is a Native American tribe that is settled in region across the United States. Also know as the fox tribe they are Algonquian language speaking group that have settlements in modern day Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska.
The United States Government formally recognizes over five hundred tribes within the fifty states. These recognized tribes are qualified for funding and other various services through grants and contracts with the government along with other sources. The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians represents one of the federally recognized tribes in the United States. Located in eight reservation communities throughout Mississippi, it consists of almost 10,000 registered members. Throughout the past couple of years, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians has faced several financial burdens regarding funding for the tribe.
After crossing to Alaska fifteen thousand years would pass before the flow of nomads finally slowed and stopped on the barren rocks of Patagonia. The migrants belonged to either of two distinct families: Indian or Inuit. They resembled each other in the colour of their skin which ranged from brown to yellow but not red. The First Nations owed their allegiance to their family, their band, their village, their tribe and in the case of several tribes, their confederacy. Families grew into clans and clans into tribes and depending on their access to good hunting and fishing.
Their other job was to come with the man on his hunts, to make the men’s meals and to drag his kill back to his camp (Carson 496) The Choctaw men were avid hunters and fished often. Men governed the tribe, performed rituals, and declared war on neighboring tribes (496). When a Choctaw was born the mother and father would separate during the birth. After the baby was delivered the parents chose a name.
Having been born and bred outside the United States, the city I grew up was more influenced by the people of India rather than Native people. Therefore, I began to search the Internet for Native tribes where I came across the Duwamish tribe. The Duwamish tribe lived in Seattle, Washington from the past 10,000 years, making them one of the oldest Native tribes that we know of in the entire world. Today, the Duwamish tribe are one of the few federally recognised Native tribes. In this research project I intend to gain a better understanding as to how a Native tribe that has existed since the glacier age has escaped being eradicated through both wars and disease.
Native American tribes have been used, abused, and decimated throughout history, and it all started with European contact. The Chumash are a group of Native Americans that are located in the California culture area. They are one of the more peaceful Native American tribes, and one of the largest. They had unique subsistence strategies and food reliance because of their location, which was basically in between the coast and inland California. Prehistoric Chumash territory was very vast, and was significantly reduced during European contact.
The Navajo and the Lakota live in completely different regions changing the available foods, geography and climate. This brings possibility for difference similarities and differences. With food being extremely important to any culture you can expect the same from these native tribes as well. With changes in traditions, climate, and geography the Lakota and Navajo tribes have enough differing them to change what foods they eat, preparation of said food, and beliefs surrounding food.
The elite occupied a small percent of the population and received special privileges such as exemption from hard labor. The chiefs were believed to hold supernatural influence, and were involved in or could control vital happenings such as rain. While the Pueblos had chiefs, it would be inaccurate to call them a chiefdom; the chiefs were not considered supernatural and did not hold as much power as those in the Mississippi valley. For the Pueblos there was not such a strong emphasis on status. They exchanged many things, such as physical items and information, and cultural exchanges. These exchanges were everywhere, and there is no specific event or person involved. These contributions include the areas of agriculture, food, language, and also government. In the areas of agriculture, the Natives being skilled farmers, have taught valuable farming techniques to the early newcomers on many crops.
George, you stated, “Various forms of culture are all around us and sometimes it is difficult to understand why different cultures respond to each other the way they do,” this is very true. I think it is a matter of history repeating itself, or in other words, learned behavior from past cultures, as well as difference in the ways of communication, and customs. Personally, I love to study the different cultures of the world because as students of history we must have an understanding of a culture, before can write about it, or more importantly preserve it. This is why it is very important for archivists to seek out education about different cultures because the world is very diverse, and everyone has a history that needs to be preserved for future generations.
A common sentiment expressed by early European settlers asserted that all Indians lived as nomadic hunters within a society devoid of any complex infrastructure for agriculture, trade, or communication. Another popular misconception spread at the time claimed that European settlers introduced the Indians to agriculture and the sedentary lifestyle that accompanied it. The truth is that Indian civilizations had begun to flourish long before contact with Europeans was made. In fact, Indian people had been cultivating crops such as maize for centuries prior to the arrival of the first Europeans (31). While nomadic tribes such as the Apache, the Sioux, and the Cheyenne did exist, their migratory lifestyles suited the environment in which they lived.
