“Between the Sexes, a Great Divide” written by Anna Quindlen, is an essay that talks about the differences between men and women, and how they see the world. She tells about her belief that boys and girls are just different and see the world in different ways, and have always been different. She gives us an image of a middle school dance where the differences can be seen the easiest because of the ‘great divide’ that occurs at all of these events throughout time. She thinks that the divide happens “not because of big differences among us, but because of the small ones” (165). Eventually, both boys and girls will have to come together as a pair and cooperate to live in this world normally.
The poem Beneath the Shadow of the Freeway written by Lorna Dee Cervantes, and the movie Hidden Figures originally a book written by Margot Lee Shetterly both convey the theme of empowerment to hard-working, strong women who can be just as smart and diligent as a man without the actual help of one. Both Dee Cervantes’ poem and Shetterly’s movie/book voice the importance of being strong willed as a women and making a life for yourself regardless your situation. Two concepts I found in these pieces of literature that I would like to obtain personally is the topic: focus on what you can control, not what you can’t, and cultivate a strong support group to achieve your success. When members of society do not conform, they are often treated differently. Those who are rebels, those who break the rules and do not fit into the status quo, become outcasts to society. These castaways are often avoided, ignored, and disrespected by societal figures. Modern society is easily said to have multiple different expectations for its affiliates, in relation to physical ideals, emotional processes, and intelligence levels. Societies’ essential goals for human life are everywhere; magazines, television, radio, the internet, and even on everyday streets.
The purpose of my essay is to explore how different social backgrounds and the social norms that follow affect the personality of two fictive characters and encourage them to break out of their station to find an identity. The protagonists Holden Caulfield in J.D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye and Tambudzai in Tsitsi Dangarembga’s novel Nervous Conditions are both victims of social norms. Therefore, the foundation of this essay was to analyze the character’s social background, which has influenced their personalities, behavior and aspirations, and consequently their opposing actions against society. Holden Caulfield is an American adolescent during the period after the Second World War.
Present at least two different sociological approaches to social inequality and discuss these approaches with reference to a concrete problem area of contemporary relevance. Social inequality can be found in various aspects of society, the question is if inequality is only caused by the lack of economical estate or if other reasons are underlining it. This essay argues how Max Weber distinguishes between social class and strata and how one often leads to the other. Furthermore, it presents Pierre Bourdieu’s notions of habitus, capital and fields as an explanation of how people can achieve different social statuses within different fields because of their capitals. At last, the two different sociological approaches to social inequality is used to analyze the case of non-traditional students at Australian universities and how they are socially disadvantaged compared to traditional students because of their lack economical support, language skills, educational skills and social relations.

In Mills’ publication, he describes the sociological imagination as “a quality of mind that will help them [humans] to use information and to develop reason in order to achieve lucid summations of what is going on in the world and of what may be happening within themselves”. (Mills, 2000, p. 5). Giddens, in his publication ‘Sociology: A brief but critical introduction’, concurs with Mills’ definition of the sociological imagination, and further states that three particular views are essential to understanding the social world: “an historical, an anthropological, and a critical sensitivity.” (Giddens, 1986, p. 13). Mills believes that the sociological imagination deals largely with two main components: the individual, and society.
Mill’s argues that to be able to distinguish between “personal troubles” and “public issues”, one must possess a sociological imagination. It is claimed that through having a sociological imagination individuals “acquire a new way of thinking” and “experience a transvaluation of values”. (Wright Mills, 1959) To strengthen this argument, Mills uses the example of a contemporary individual’s self-conscious view of themselves as an outcast from their society. He argues that such an outlook is a result of “an absorbed realisation of social relativity”.
From the time I was born, I was given certain characteristics and behaviors that follow through my life and creates a barrier for myself to have a limit on opportunities that could be taken. Every single person has a unique way of expressing their cultural identity because no one grew up exactly the same. I wouldn’t have my own identity if I didn’t carry morals and beliefs I had while growing up. I also gained characteristics that represent me from the society we live in today. Thinking of the daily tasks I partake in and how I do them in a certain way makes me wonder why I do it.
this statement, it does not answer my question. The problem was not that the text on multicultural counseling failed to address me as an ‘ethnic’ minority or that my position was lost between the black and white, but rather, why we need to identify our selves on the basis of our ‘race’ or colour?. As I thought about my own childhood and origin, I realise that I was brought up with strong humanistic values, by both rational parents that were not ‘religious’. Although I am a Muslim and was brought up as one but with hen site I can see that I was brought up with a deeply developed conscious and inward teaching of Sufism which is the heart of Islam.
A challenge like no Other! A handshake, a tight hug, a gesture like bowing down, a kiss on the cheek, or something quite unique like sticking one’s tongue out at someone are all results of multicultural cities. According to Hutchison (2017), at the beginning of the third millennium, more than half of the global population lives in cities and economic integration as well as globalization fueled what is called cultural diversity and originated what is known now as multicultural cities. Sociology dictionary describes the multi-cultural society/city as “a society characterized by cultural pluralism”; one society rejoices cultural mixtures such as linguistic, religious, ethnical diversities (Encyclopedia.com, 2017). The wealth of multicultural cities poses challenges to the multicultural cities and their citizens.
One’s personal situation is linked to current history and the society they live in. The correlation between the two is called sociological imagination created by American sociologist C. Wright Mills in his essay, Sociological Imagination. In clarity, “neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both” (Mills 1). In order to develop such skills, you must be able to free yourself from one context and look at things in a different point of view. He argued that one of the main tasks of sociology was to transform personal problems into public and political issues or vice versa.
Similarities and Differences between Two Cities A city is a place where a large number of populations resides for the permanent period of time. City’s importance depends upon the size, location, and structure of the area. Cities have the highly organized population which is comparatively bigger than town or village. A city can provide different opportunities to know about the culture and language.
Living in a diverse world it’s distinction and similarities. The village is a small area with a small population. Life in the village is very basic and traditional while life in the city is full of luxury and modernity. Cities have a large population and it is often noisy and crowded. On the other hand, the lifestyles in villages and urban areas are totally different, but you can hardly find any similarities.
