Cultural Diversity In America

The cultural diversity in my country has always been a sign of identity. Since kindergarten, the teachers would explain the cultural merge between the Spanish, Africans, Indians, and Americans that identified me as Puerto Rican. There, I understood each country’s customs were as important as the next one, and they complimented each other into my lifestyle. Thanks to early education, I comprehended that diversity was almost a synonym of Puerto Rican. When I started to learn about the American history, I could not understand how people would reject black people just because of their skin color or beliefs. Later, I learned about the racism against Hispanic citizens and Latinos in the United States. In my head, it was impossible to conceive how people underappreciated cultures who brought so much good to mine.

I spent a marvelous week where I met people from Puerto Rico, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, among other places. The states, although really close, had very different lifestyles. The week I was fortunate enough to spend with those smart and different girls defined my perception of what a multi-cultural encounter was. My day counselor was raised in Africa and she always answered all the questions I threw at her, I had never met a person from that continent. The same thing happened to me, a lot of girls were really curious about Puerto Rico. Seven days were not enough to learn all about us, but they were enough to start an itch for more programs like that.
