Today in the United States, there are different views and perspectives on the cultural norm of men who beat their partners. Those views are seen to be going against the law and cultural norms (Stuart Van Wormer, 2013, p. 227). However, according to our textbook, Stuart Van Wormer, 2013, stated at the time of early Roman law, wives were seen as a property of men. Although there has been some debate of the prevention of violence against women, men had the right to correct their wives. Later on, during the 1970s, women’s liberation movement had taken place and all the issues of women’s rape had caught everyone’s attention (Stuart Van Wormer, 2013, p. 228). The mere fact that court does not handle domestic violence cases as serious as they should, in the court alongside the relationship, most of the cases are dismissed. In addition, their batterer’s bail is usually not set high in order to keep them in custody. It also, makes it harder for individuals that are married, because it is solely the victim’s choice than the district attorney. Even with a court order put in place, the violation of that court order is deemed to have no consequence. Within the criminal justice system, another factor battered women are faced with is the challenges set from the prosecutors. Violence includes physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Speaking out of the traumatic events of an individual’s experience is an emotional toll for woman and also increases the traumatic event to re-experience what they have experienced. Battered women can only handle so much; they deal with the constant fear of their life and their children. The fear of leaving also makes them incapable of leaving their abusive relationship. In addition, the first place they will tend to seek help is from the criminal justice system. In most cases the criminal justice can do only but so much to provide protection from their batterers. This gives battered women one option, and that is to kill their batterers. Women kill their batters because they are faced with constant fear, pain, and psychological factors that lead them to kill their abuser. However, after they have killed their batters they are faced with the criminal justice system outcome of the determination of the rest of their lives. Although, killing their batterers their only option, battered women kill their batters out of self-defense or because they feel that is their only way of their abusive
