As a college student, I understand the struggle of debt. I come from a family with low income. Growing up poor, the burden of working and going to school had its hardships and took a large toll on me. Now that City College of San Francisco gives free tuition it has helped. I’m still struggling, however, not as badly as last semester thanks to free college.

I believe that I should receive the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo scholarship because of the rising tuition cost to attend Texas Tech University and due to my family’s income, Our income relies mainly on my dads farming, which the income fluctuates from year to year.

As I begin my college education, I want to continue doing my best in order to accomplish my goal of becoming a registered nurse. Tell us about your sorority experience. I have had a fantastic sorority experience. I went through recruitment and joined a sorority with a completely open mind because I am the first in my family to participate in greek life, so I really didn’t know what all to expect. I am confident when I saw say, joining a sorority was the best decision of my life. I have had the opportunity to make amazing friends in and out of my sorority, meet impressive alumni at our international conference, and learn about and actively advocate for our wonderful philanthropy.
While education can open doors to your life, having the initiative to be successful is what really counts. I am determined and I have the desire to study Business but am lacking the financial support needed to achieve my goal. The Plant City Lions Club Scholarship would help me by giving me an opportunity to pursue my dream career. My desire is to be able to study in order to work and give back to my parents who have helped me accomplish graduating from Plant City High School with honors and with a weighted GPA of 4.7321.Receiving financial support will allow me to make a difference in the challenging world of Business. With rates increasing every year , it is becoming extremely difficult to receive an education and overcome tremendous debt at the same time. I am currently going to school majoring in Elementary education, which will keep me in the middle class, around the same place that my family has been in. Society often believes college is a necessary experience for a better future, but I argue that the future will not be any better when student debt becomes a part of life for those who follow that mainstream belief. Most parents often dream of the great colleges and universities that their children will get accepted into; however, they fail to think of the cost to attend those institutions. Financial aids! Financial aids! Yes there are financial aids that students can apply to lessen the student debt.
As a first generation student to attend college from a family of seven, the journey to a higher education has been arduous and overwhelming. My family gives me all the encouragement I need and are very optimistic about pursuing a higher degree. Unlike myself, my parents did not have the opportunity to attend college. My parents were born and raised in a small town in Mexico where the highest level of education they received was fifth grade. I have worked since I was 14 years old to support my parents with bills, and also saving for college and my own vehicle.
I feel I am a well-rounded individual and I hold an optimistic perspective on life because life is too short to do otherwise.
