Immigration has always been a controversial topic in the United States. Recently, it has become an even more relevant and heated issue due to current presidential candidate, Donald Trump’s racist comments towards Mexican Immigrants as well as other racial minorities. Despite the fact that it has always been a highly discussed issue, it has never been resolved in an appropriate manner in which both sides of the argument can find a middle ground. As of today there are approximately eleven million undocumented immigrants in the United States, most of them are hiding in the shadows of society in fear of being deported. The American Immigration Council mentions in their website the process, as well as the different methods through which immigrants can be granted citizenship. “The Immigration and Naturalization Act (INA), the body of law governing current immigration policy, provides for an annual worldwide limit of 675,000 permanent immigrants, with certain exceptions for close family members. Congress and the President determine a separate number for refugee admissions.” In addition, the website states that, “immigration to the United States is based upon the following principles: the reunification of families, admitting immigrants with skills that are valuable to the U.S. economy, protecting refugees, and promoting diversity”. Rape has sadly become a common issue amongst the women who are making their way to the United States. In fact, it occurs so often that many women prior to making the journey take birth control or other forms of contraceptives to prevent the unwanted pregnancies.
